RIP Ramona Fradon (Oct 2nd 1926 - Feb 24 2024)
Link
One of the first women to work steadily in the medium best known for her work on Silver Age Aquaman, co-creating Metamorpho and her work on Superfriends.
Her art always had this fun, whimsical vibe that never waned over the years. She passed away at 96 shortly after retiring in January 2024. A tour de force, she kept drawing covers and commissions consistently until her retirement.

It was wonderful to see two classic Atlantean creatures featured in Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom: King Arthur's giant seahorse steed Storm, and friend and ally Topo the octopus. It was especially fun seeing Topo helping Arthur in freeing Orm from the Deserter Kingdom prison.

Aquaman Villain Movie Ideas, Part XIV: Octopus Man
So, I picked Octopus Man from the list of villains, and it turns out, that's a bit complicated. Octopus Man was a mutated creature from way back in the day, who has largely been forgotten about. And then there's Topo, an octopus creature who is largely an ally of Aquaman, who was briefly a horrific monster in the New 52.
Origin Movie: Topo would certainly be included, but not as a main villain. And if you used the other one, I'm sure it's be a solid monster movie, but not much else.
Sequel Movie: Again, solid monster movie, not much else.
Finale Movie: I guess it would be a deep cut, but it would feel like you've just hit that point in the series where you've run out of ideas, rather than an actual finale.
Supporting Villain: Toss him in with the Trench people. That'll get a few nerds excited for the reference at least.
Here are my rankings:
Supporting Villain: the only viable one.
Sequel Movie: Sure.
Origin Movie: Probably not.
Finale Movie: Probably not.

DC in the 60s definitely has a problem with characterization. I can tell they had a problem with it because I can't name a personality trait for half of the original Justice League members. Barry Allen is so boring that he may as well not exist. The Atom is just a worse, more boring Ant-Man, Aquaman would be nothing if not for his supporting cast (like aqualad and Topo the octopus), etc.
The only main characters on the team who had personalities back then were Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and maybe Green Lantern. Superman and Wonder Woman had great personalities and concepts from the beginning, Green Lantern at least had a whole family and stuff to flesh him out, and Green Arrow had the only personality trait necessary (namely, the more lighthearted version of Batman). But besides those four, DC's main heroes didn't really seem to have much in terms of personalities.

CONTRARY TO PUBLISHED REVIEWS…
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (aka Aquaman2) is getting bashed by movie critics. I’ve always thought critics were far too easy on the Marvel movies, and excessively negative with DC movies. That’s the case here. I’ve been suffering from Comic book Movie Fatigue (both Marvel and DC) but I can honestly say, I enjoyed Aquaman 2.
I think if you liked the first one, you’ll like the sequel. If you didn’t, you won’t.
I wasn’t too excited when I heard Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was returning as the villain Black Manta. The character was lame the first time but there was a little improvement this time around. (But he ultimately comes across stupid).
But the core of the movie was about Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and his half brother Orm (Patrick Wilson). In the first film, Orm was a villain but showed signs of redemption at the end. This movie continues his story arc, as Orm is forced to buddy-up with Aquaman to try and save the world. The bro-bonding is frequently played for laughs but I thought it worked. And the humor worked within the context of the larger story (unlike Thor Love and Thunder which was tonally a mess).
Fan of that actor accused of beating his wife had campaigned to get Amber Heard fired from the sequel. I liked Heard as Mera (although her hair color is a little strange). Mera played an important role in the story. Good for her.
In an early trailer some of the effects looked bad but I didn’t see any problem in the actual film. Atlantis looks great as in the first movie.
I especially liked Aquaman’s two undersea friends who were added to the cast: Storm, the giant seahorse that Aquaman rides into battle; and Topo the octopus but in this case, not just a name but also a designation: "He's a Tactical Observation and Pursuit Operative”.
While the DCEU had problems under director/producer Zack Snyder dark vision, I think both Wonder Woman films and both Aquaman films are worthy additions to the genre. (And for what it’s worth, I also liked Ezra Miller’s Flash movie.)

What are some shitty things Arthur put Garth and Mera through?
Well. When Aquababy (Arthur and Mera's son) was kidnapped. Black Manta was like kill Aqualad or I kill your baby. And Arthur with no hesitation turns to Garth says "Sorry Minnow" and tries to murder him. Then Black Manta goes through with his plan and kills Aquababy anyways. (Deprived him of water)
Then Arthur is like come on Aqualad after Black Manta. And has Topo the octopus bring Aquababy's dead body back to Mera. Garth says fuck off you just tried to kill me. And Arthur says to hell with you this is what I get for taking care of you all those years and swims off. Mera discovers Aquababy is still alive but is unable to get the medical equipment in time and the baby dies.
Arthur is useless and abandons them both in this period. Mera is going crazy because she is all alone her baby is dead her husband is gone etc. Arthur when he after years returns to where she's been forcibly locked up in Atlantis psych ward he ends up killing her during the argument. But then Mera gets up at her funeral and is not murdered but goes back to her dimension.
Arthur then cheats on Mera a bunch of times. And abandons Atlantis. Garth yells him into gear. Arthur randomly gives Garth the crown. Makes Garth name his baby after the country Arthur invaded.
In Prime Earth idk how much is still canon but he's still generally a dick

How can all of Garth’s personality, relationships, and history became irrelevant to the current comics runs? What happened?
Great question! After Flashpoint happened, the Dc Universe reset. For a lot of comics, there were no major character or lore changes. However, the Aquaman comics got a major overhaul.
It’s important to note that Aquaman lore has changed over the years, but the changes were either slow or the kept much of the same characterization, but updated certain aspects. For example, although Death of a Prince takes place in the Bronze Age of comics, it was playing off dynamics already established in the Silver Age, and the story was tweaked slightly when the post-crisis reboot happened, so the events were still relevant in Volumes 4-6 (80s-early 2000s). The lore expanded to say, these major elements are still here! We have changed some things, and here they are! And this is how it effected what you might be familiar with, etc.
Then comes the New52. In order to make the comics easier for newcomers to read, about 90% of the characters and Atlantean history were removed completely from canon. This includes Garth, who was the longest-running humanoid supporting character!! (Topo the octopus is the longest-running returning character, and for the record they also got rid of him)
They re-did Arthur’s backstory (adapted to something similar to his Silver Age origins) and some characters, like Orm, were completely re-done as well to fit the new lore. They did not do this for Garth; in fact, every major element of his character that tied him to the story was removed. His kingdom I mentioned in that last ask? Gone. Atlan, the wizard who trained him? Gone (although they do re-use that name, the New52 character named Atlan is not Atlan from previous stories). The rumor about purple eyes? Actually not gone, but they did completely change what it meant and when we meet an entire community of purple-eyed Atlanteans, Garth is not among them. (Purple eyes have been an element to his character since his introduction, btw)
“But comicvine says Garth appeared in the New52!” I hear you cry. Technically true. But here’s a fun fact: they “teased” his return on the last page of one comics, and his design was so off from all previous versions that the fans did not know who he was supposed to be. Why? He was wearing a color Garth was never seen in, sporting a strange tattoo on the wrong side of his face (those lines aren’t a tattoo in pre-flashpoint btw…it’s a scar, that Atlan gave him) and because Garth had always, always, always been the child that Arthur adopted…the fact that he showed up as a fully formed adult with no connection to Arthur was so strange that even the Aquafans did not make the connection!!
This character, a mercenary who never spoke to Arthur, appeared a few more times before being quietly re-set in Rebirth.
Now, let’s recall that the comics removed all aspects of this character’s connection to the story, including the very fact that he was essentially Arthur’s adopted child. This is STILL TRUE in Rebirth. I cannot think of a time that Garth spoke directly to Arthur in any of the comics, but Mera said once that Arthur basically paid for Garth to go to Magic Underwater Wizard College, which is something that exists for some reason. Also he dropped out of Magic Underwater Wizard College because his girlfriend died, but we don’t know that woman’s name and he has literally never brought it up outside that single comics.
I want to say, I am not against changing backstories. Garth has had two and a half backstories since the 60s! But they grow and expand to fit the new world they live in. The writers took time and energy, they poured their hearts into making this new character appeal to their brave new world. But DC has not given Garth that same grace these past 15ish years. They had so, so many chances as well! They could have rewritten him in a way that was satisfying to his old fans. But they do not give a shit about Garth.
You see. DC wants to trick you. They want to say “everything is canon now” and not have to put in any effort. except my dears, the Aquaman comics are so complicated that they cannot exist at the same time. Because sure, maybe we can say Garth is no longer royal, because that kingdom his parents ruled no longer exists. But without that bloodline, why is he the most powerful Atlantean sorcerer? Did he never complete a highly emotional task of claiming his birthright, and accepting the death of Tula so he can heal his emotional wounds? Oh. Tula is alive? And now related to Orm? And they hardly know each other? Well, he just went to Magic College and he’s good for absolutely no reason at all. Is he still close with Arthur? I’m not sure. Arthur paid for college, but has never spoken to Garth. Garth is absent from all major life events in the Aquafamily. He has never met Arthur’s biological kid. He has no useful role inside a comic that he used to be an integral part of, his usual role has been split among others. So there goes his backstory. There go his emotional connections. Goodbye to the major emotional highs and lows as well. Goodbye to his personality traits, intentionally written to be played off of Arthur’s. Goodbye to any kind of role in the narrative; when you can replace his character with a nameless extra, is he really part of the story?
And when you remove all of that…what is there to like about this character, anyway?
#if you like characters for their appearance alone that is fine I guess#except I like Garth for his backstory. his characterization. his personality. his role in the narrative.#and when you remove all of that? then that is not who I like anymore. that’s just a guy.#garth of shayeris#aquaman#aquaman meta
